Textile Trends

The latest events, stockists, products and industry insights

Contemporary but timeless is how I describe my organically inspired textile designs. Creating colours and patterns to represent our natural environment and Australian landscapes with cool coastal tones, rich rainforest shades or the deep flush of our sunsets and red earth is how I bring my Indigenous heritage to original artworks.

This organic inspiration combined with design briefs to evoke a particular style or customising colours makes my work versatile and suitable for any well-styled commercial setting.

Jamboree - Wollongong - Batik Workshop Saturday 19 October.

This is an immersive, hands-on weekend to unplug, retreat to the forest and be inspired by a full program of creative workshops in art, textiles, craft, plants, food, cooking and creativity. My special Batik workshop is available to ticket-holders who register for it.

Batik is a wax- resist art form that has been practiced for centuries in Indonesia, Java, Sri Lanka and in many other countries around the world.

In the workshops I will introduce you to this unique meditative artform and guide you through the processes of creating individual designs on fabrics that you can take home and use for cushions, artwork or any creative sewing projects.

You will learn how to use a traditional canting to draw designs on fabric with hot wax to create a resist and how to apply & prepare reactive dyes to dye your fabric.

We supply all materials you will need to create your very own unique bundle of Batik fabrics.  See the technique to get the idea in this Batik demonstration video.

Shibori is the Japanese term for the dye-resist technique of binding, clamping, or gathering cloth to create unique individual designs on fabrics.

In this workshop you learn the various techniques used to create beautiful hand dyed Shibori fabrics dyed in Indigo Dye.

You will take home a selection of beautiful hand dyed Indigo fabrics in organic intricate designs using stitching, clamping and tying techniques.

We supply all material you need to create your very own unique bundle of Indigo Dyed fabrics.

I can customise workshops for your group or organisation. Some examples…

Tie Dyeing workshops

Add some colour to your life! Revisit your hippie days or recreate them here and now. Grab a bunch of friends, workmates or a group of kids for their next party and arrange a Tie-Dye Workshop with me.

Tie dye just about anything! Grab your favourite old shirt (or new), calico bags, pillow cases, t-shirts or whatever takes your fancy. Best to work with 100% cotton items. A couple of hours is all you need to create something spectacular.

I love tie dye and my workshops are great for all ages. You’re never too old or too young to wear a tie dye T-shirt, summer frock, scarf or bandana.

Have a go! We bring all supplies you need to create your very own unique Tie Dye but please bring along your own item/s to dye. Or let us know and we can arrange a selection of T-shirts or Calico bags for you to purchase on the day.

Interested in arranging a workshop? Talk to me about visiting your group for a presentation or hands-on workshop from 2 to 4 hours. Prices start from $150/workshop based on day/date, location and participants. Drop me a note at Contact.

Delighted to offer my products or fabrics online or with retailers…

Kirriken.com – Luxury fashion and accessories featuring fabric designs by Indigenous Australian Artists. They feature my scarves –but if a product is sold out, feel free to contact me.

Currently commissioned to create a range of stunning new designs for several clients, my colour trends continue to expand with natural soft tones and textural prints.

Living so close to a National Park I often find myself immersed in nature photography for detailed images of bark, rocks, sandstone, grasses & rock pools. Back in the studio I explore different techniques of surface dyeing & batik to recreate these natural textures onto silk and cottons for effect, colours and feel. The designs I recreate continue to form the groundwork for new printed textile collections and artwork.

For what’s available now, you can see my range at Fabric Gallery.
